Pigeons are NYC’s feathered celebrities, adored and abhorred in equal measure. These urban daredevils, originally from Europe, Northern Africa, and India, have been strutting their stuff in New York since the 1600s.
Back in the 1940s and 50s, the rooftops of the Lower East Side were like pigeon penthouses. Nowadays, the hobby has mostly flown the coop from Manhattan, but you can still find pigeon enthusiasts and racers tending their flocks on the rooftops of Brooklyn and the Bronx.
