Embroidered graphic "New York" with "Est. 1664".
In 1664, the English took possession of New Netherland from the Dutch, renaming it New York. The Dutch residents received generous terms of surrender, and religious toleration and the verification of property rights assured that most stayed when the colony became the province of New York. The Province of New York was a British proprietary colony and later royal colony on the northeast coast of North America. New York played a crucial political and strategic role during the American Revolution.
