Hilma Af Klint, a Swedish artist, and mystic was born in 1862 and died in 1944. Her paintings, a visual representation of complex spiritual ideas, predate Kandinsky's first purely abstract compositions. She was inspired by Theosophy and believed in the importance of contacting the so-called "High Masters"—often by way of séances.
