New York was going through hard times in the 1970s. Crime was at an all-time high, and tourism was at an all-time low.
The Madison Avenue Advertising Firm of Wells, Rich Greene was hired by New York state to create an ad campaign that would help revitalize the city. Enter, Milton Glaser a designer well known for his work celebrating arts and culture and credited with founding New York Magazine with Clay Felker in 1968. An image, scribbled on the back of a napkin while riding in a taxi would become Glaser's most famous design and New York City's most iconic symbol.
