Brooklyn was first settled by the Dutch in the 1630s, and six largely agricultural towns - Brooklyn, Flatlands, Flatbush, New Utrecht, Bushwick, and Gravesend - soon thrived. Consolidated as Kings County in 1683, the region grew modestly as an appendage of Manhattan. On January 1, 1898, Brooklyn was consolidated and annexed to form the current five-borough structure of New York City. The boro9ugh continues to maintain some distinct culture.
