While the first taxi cabs of the early 1900s were painted red and green, it wasn't long before yellow became the norm. The wife of taxi company owner Albert Rockwell suggested he repaint his entire fleet yellow, and his company became so successful that he officially incorporated the Yellow Taxicab Company in 1912.

In the late 1960s, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission helped establish a law requiring all "licensed medallion" taxis to be painted a specific shade of yellow. This alerted riders that the yellow taxis were regulated, supervised, and licensed to pick up anyone who hailed a cab. The specific shade of yellow officially matched the shade used for yellow school buses.
